It could have been so different.
You could have taught me how to ride a bike,
climb tree, make angels in the snow.
You could have held my hand when I felt lost,
shouldered my tears, when first love broke my heart.
given me strength encouraged my confidence.
You would have been my hero.
I would have been a daddy's girl,
adored you, made you proud.
I would have been there when age weakened you,
cared for you and sat by your bedside,
held your hand as you slipped away.
instead you died alone and I am sad.
It could have been so different.
I mourn not for the man you were,
but for the father you could have been.
